He’d planned to leave Cece sleeping in bed early in the morning. They’d slept in the bed in the elegantly appointed guest room, where they’d made love a second time before falling asleep. It seemed a simple enough prospect to sneak out before dawn. After all, he knew better than anyone that she was a late sleeper.
However, in the end, she was the one to wake him as she silently gathered up her clothes from the bedroom floor. Only the faintest hint of light shone through the open door to illuminate her form as she dressed.
“Cece?”
She started guiltily, a sure sign she hadn’t meant to wake him. “Hi, Jack.”
“You’re sneaking out.”
“I need to be back in my room when Theo wakes up.”
“You weren’t going to wake me up before leaving, were you?” He sat up, the sheet falling to his waist.
She didn’t even bother to look guilty at his accusation. She merely shrugged. “Come on, Jack, let’s not make more of this than it is. Old habits die hard. Under the circumstances, it’s not surprising something like this happened.”
“Old habits die hard?” Bitterness tinged his voice. He ran a hand through his hair, scraping his nails against the back of his head. “And here I thought this was consolation sex. How many excuses do you think you need to sleep with me?”
“You think these are excuses to sleep with you?” She tugged her T-shirt over her head. “Well, they’re not. They’re reasons not to get involved with you again.”
The absolute conviction of her words stung. “I don’t recall asking you to get involved.”
“Oh, no,” she scoffed, tugging on her jeans with brusque motions. “Of course you wouldn’t want to ‘get involved’ with me.” She made bunny ears with her fingers at the words get involved. “That would be way too much commitment for you.”
He didn’t bother to pretend he didn’t know what she meant. After all, she was right. Commitment just wasn’t his thing. He wouldn’t wish himself on anyone, let alone someone he cared about.
When he didn’t answer, her expression soured. Amazing how she managed to look both lovely and pissed off.
She yanked on the zipper of her jeans and rammed her feet into her shoes. “You haven’t changed one bit.”
She strayed close enough to the bed that he reached out to grab her wrist. He tugged her toward him and she lost her balance, tumbling onto the bed. Rolling, he trapped her under him.
“No. I haven’t changed. And neither has this attraction between us. All I want is for you to admit it.” She bucked against him and a spark of sexual awareness lit her eyes. But her defiance was equally strong as she boldly met his gaze. “Just admit it,” he goaded.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” She enunciated each word with slow defiance.
“It’s not like you to ignore the truth. You’ve always been one of the most honest people I’ve ever known.”
She blanched, then pulled away from him with such ferocity he had little choice but to let her go.
